Sheltering Arms is looking to hire a Certified Teacher for the Limited Secure Placement Program that is an 8 to 25 bed programs that houses juvenile delinquent youth between the ages of 11-17 who are serving their sentence in our facility under high surveillance. The Certified Teacher serves as an in-house instructor who ensures that the teens receive developmentally-appropriate curriculum and engages youth in the learning process.

Essential Functions:

  • Utilizes DOE curriculum to provide sound and appropriate instruction to the teens in the facility.
  • Assists in positive behavioral interventions with individual students.
  • Works closely with the Education Specialist to determine education goals and to advocate for continued education following discharge.
  • Provides the residents with developmentally appropriate lessons and homework.
  • Tracks each student’s progress.
  • Works closely with Case Planner and other key social work staff to contribute to treatment plans and goals.
  • Provides training to all members of the staff as needed.
  • Dusts and washes surfaces, including cabinets, tables, and chairs.
  • Provides guidance to residents on the areas of health education, including sexual health education for youth 12 and older who are known to be sexually active.
  • Maintains the classroom to ensure that it is a neat, orderly, and safe environment.
  • Provides guidance to Juvenile Specialist staff that are present in the classroom as needed.
  • Other related tasks that may be assigned

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Education required.
  • Current and Up-To-Date Certification in either: A) Middle Childhood (grades 5-9) B) Adolescent (grades 7-12) Required.
  • Must maintain certification throughout employment.
  • Knowledge of ACS regulations, a plus.
  • Commitment to enriching the lives of at-risk youth.
  • At least two years of experience working with Middle School-aged Children in a classroom setting.
  • Must have exceptional verbal and written communication skills in order to maintain required documentation
  • Must have a commitment to promoting positive behaviors to the youth.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Sheltering Arms
  • Must be able to pass required Safe Crisis Management (SCM) and recertify annually
  • Ability to be a team player, flexibility

Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to complete all direct care worker and standard administrative and support tasks including but not limited to hands-on care with consumers, climbing up and down stairs, operation of computers/phones/fax/printer/copy machine, and the ability to lift and move consumers (if necessary) up to 200 lbs, ability to lift boxes, furniture, and equipment up to 30 lbs. Ability to perform physical restraint of youth using approved restraint techniques. Physical and PPD clearances required and reevaluated annually

Compensation:

Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and accomplishments.
