Sheltering Arms is looking to hire an attorney that will act as an in-house legal resource for the Foster Care and Adoption Department. The Attorney will support the ongoing compliance of the agency and accurately represent clients by: Attending court proceedings, reviewing court orders, filing petitions, and responding to legal inquiries. The Attorney will also act as a key component in the education of staff and management regarding best practices in court proceedings and providing preparation for testimony.

Essential Functions

  • Review all court orders issued against the agency in order to review and decide on the necessity of appeal.
  • Represent the agency by attending court hearings when a no reasonable efforts finding has been issued.
  • Collaborate with FCLS and other external legal representatives to ensure the interests of the agency are being met.
  • Draft and file TPR petitions.
  • Prepare witnesses for hearings and other court proceedings.
  • Conduct discovery, hearings, TPR trials, depositions, oral arguments and court conferences as necessary.
  • Appear in court on cases involving FCLS to ensure proper representation of the agency.
  • Review court orders to ensure that the agency is in full compliance.
  • Conduct appellate work if TPR is appealed.
  • Maintain legal tracking system.
  • Conduct legal trainings for Sheltering Arms staff.
  • Attend FTCs where other counsel is present.
  • Review court reports in high profile or complicated matters.
  • Attend all departmental meetings, agency meetings, and external trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • New York State Bar admitted.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in the field.
  • Knowledge of ACS a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of Child Welfare and Family Law.
  • Experience litigating in New York Family Court
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.

Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to complete all standard administrative and support tasks including but not limited to climbing up and down stairs, operation of computers/phones/fax/printer/copy machine, and the ability to lift boxes, furniture, and equipment up to 30lbs. Must be able to travel from the various locations and sites of Sheltering Arms.
