Sheltering Arms is seeking a Lead Mentor who will take the lead in facilitating groups as well as collaborate with the Project Coordinator to assess the group's dynamics and progress and ensure the quality implementation of the Interactive Journaling curriculum in the group setting.


Essential Functions

  • Serve as lead facilitator for a group of 20 participants and meeting weekly with Project Coordinator to discuss progress with Interactive Journaling curriculum in the group and plan for upcoming group meetings
  • Meet individually with 4 designated mentees at least once a week
  • Be available to provide emotional support, guidance, and advice to mentees at all times via phone
  • Assist mentees in personal development and growth
  • Complete client progress notes and other assessments of client progress and communicating client needs to program coordinator
  • Administer data collection instruments (such as skills tests or self-assessments) to participants and providing Project Coordinator with results
  • Take attendance and distributing metro cards at group meetings
  • Identify other services that would be beneficial to clients
  • Attend initial and ongoing training and other technical assistance or professional development activities identified by the Department of Probation or Sheltering Arms



  • Bachelors degree required
  • Demonstrated successful experience facilitating youth groups, with experience with positive youth development principles, cognitive-behavioral techniques, or motivational interviewing preferred; or the willingness and ability to be trained in these approaches.
  • Experience working with youth of color, runaway, homeless, or at-risk youth, or youth involved with the justice system.
  • Should be familiar with the Jamaica community and its resources
