Assistant Cook, Early Childhood Education

Sheltering Arms is currently seeking candidates for Assistant Cook in our Early Childhood Education Day Cares in the Corona, NY. The Assistant Cook will be responsible for providing support to the Head Cook, with the aim of supporting dietary needs of children by cooking and preparing nutritious meals daily. The Assistant Cook will also support the maintenance of the cleanliness and safety in all areas of food handling, appliances, storage of supplies and cooking utensils space, as in accordance with NYC Dept. of Health and NYS OCFS requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with the development and preparation of menus in collaboration with the cook, nutritionist/dietitian, and ensuring that the meals are well balanced and meet dietary needs of the youth
  • Preparing and purchasing food based on menu for cooking and distribution, as well as preparing and serving holiday meals 
  • Maintaining proper storage and control of waste, including clean up after meals (pots, pans, dishes, silverware, sink, stove), disposal of garbage and maintenance of the general cleanliness of the facility and outside grounds
  • Defrost and cleans refrigerators and freezers as needed
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety in all areas of food handling, appliances, storage of supplies and eating and cooking utensils
  • Supervising the proper maintenance of equipment, kitchen and pantry area
  • Maintaining proper safety and sanitation practices, including personal hygiene
  • Participating in food related learning activities in the classroom, including introducing new foods to children and other food-related learning experiences
  • Participating and assisting in planning for parent nutrition and consumer education
  • Attending any necessary trainings, workshops and seminars pertaining to food preparation and nutrition
  • Other duties may be assigned

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, GED equivalent, or other relevant vocational trainings/certifications required
  • Food Preparation Training/Food Handler’s Certificate required
  • First Aid and CPR trainings required and recertified as needed
