One of the many Sheltering Arms services is to provide care for children in foster care and juvenile detention. The Sheltering Arms Health Services clinic is a centralized medical home in the South Bronx that provides and coordinates comprehensive, trauma informed, and evidence based medical, mental health and dental care for all of the children placed in our foster care and juvenile detention 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 

Sheltering Arms is seeking for a Part Time Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist for our Health Services department located in the Bronx. 

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist is responsible for providing complete initial psychiatric evaluations for children and youth entering our foster care or juvenile justice programs, or when the need for an updated evaluation is requested as part of treatment or planning by the treatment team. The psychiatrist will provide oversight of children receiving psychotropic medications, and review and approve treatment plans developed by in-house therapists.  The psychiatrist will also provide clinical supervision to the 2 psychiatric nurse practitioners who complete the psychiatric care team. The psychiatrist’s care is supported by the nurses, pediatric providers, mental health therapists and case planners who make up our Health Services Department.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  Essential Functions:

  • Psychotherapeutic intervention including psychopharmacologic management and monitoring, with related documentation of care.
  • Clinical liaison with internal and external health and mental health practitioners
  • Supervision of licensed mental health nurse practitioners



  • New York State Licensed Physician
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Computer literacy
  • Minimum of 2 years clinical psychiatric experience in a multidisciplinary setting

Physical Requirements:

Must have the ability to complete all standard administrative and support tasks including but not limited to climbing up and down stairs, operation of computers/phones/fax/printer/copy machine, and the ability to lift patients, boxes, furniture and equipment up to 30 lbs. Must attain physical and PPD clearance to be eligible to work with our populations.
