Cure Violence is  a community-based gun violence prevention program that aims to reduce and prevent shootings through the use of public health strategies. The program is a replication of the evidence-based Cure Violence model.

Sheltering Arms is currently seeking the community coordinator that will perform work involving planning, implementation, coordination and monitoring of community services to other credible messengers and young people with risk factors for violence. The Community Coordinator will actively create and sustain partnerships. He or she will provide service linkages and communication with intergovernmental agencies and community-based organizations.

Essential Functions:

  • Liaising with community-based organizations and city government to build synergy and expand programmatic offerings.
  • Coordinating themed weekends of action geared towards public safety where community organizations and affected populations communicate.
  • Serve as the site’s primary community representative to their specific neighborhood, precinct and catchment area.
  • Identify new community groups, public and private initiatives with which to build relationships.
  • Coordinate and promote anti-gun violence workshops and pro-social events where community stakeholders and agencies partner to communicate and deliver.
  • Work within neighborhoods and with populations who may be at increased risk for violence.
  • Produce events and manage community coalitions.
  • Identify emerging community issues affecting public safety to help guide the site’s response.
  • Work alongside City agencies to conduct briefings and community meetings outlining city services to key community and faith leader stakeholders.
  • Facilitate hiring panel process including outreach and recruitment for potential site staff and/or participants.
  • Create outreach materials, talking points and presentation materials.


  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college
  • Two years of experience in community work or community-centered activities in an area related to employment or education development
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel
  • Comfort traveling throughout NYC
