Serving working families in the community, this center meets a growing need for high quality, affordable early education, and adds to our widely reputed Early Childhood program.

Sheltering Arms is proud to announce the expansion of the Harriet Tubman center with the opening of a brand new Early Head Start Program! The Early Head Start program provides both center-based and homebased services in the community for expecting families, and children under the age of 3. The Program offers free child development activities and educational programs for eligible children and families through ACS-contracted Early Head Start programs, which are designed to provide the skills necessary to thrive academically, socially, and physically. Children's mental health and well-being are a major component of the program. Children are screened for developmental and social/emotional delays, with on-going assessments serving as a foundation for individualization of lesson plans and developmental activities.

Sheltering Arms is currently seeking an Educational/Disabilities Coordinator I in our new Early Head Start Program at the Harriet Tubman Center.  The Educational Coordinator provides reflective supervision and comprehensive support to program support staff in their interactions with children and families. The Ed/Disabilities Coordinator will support staff efforts to provide an education-rich, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment. This is a full time position in the South Bronx; comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, life, vision, prescription, and pension plan.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting classroom observations of teachers; reviewing all case records/lesson plans;  providing ongoing feedback
  • Ensuring that children are screened, referred, evaluated and able to access services
  • Attending IEP meetings, and assisting families as needed; and monitoring disability services in the classrooms; ensuring that teaching staff and service providers are working to implement daily IEP goals
  • Conducting workshops/training for staff
  • Providing regular written communication, reports, memos; and submitting reports to the QI Department and Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator(s)
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, plus NYS teacher certification in ECE (Birth – Grade 2) is required
  • Previous experience working with Pre-School aged children
  • Prior management experience preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus
