Sheltering Arms is seeking a Registered Dietitian, This is a part-time position, for 2 days (14 hours) per week. Nutritionist will oversee nutrition and food service operations of all Sheltering Arms childcare sites (Head Start, Early Head Start, and Early Learn) – a total of 11 sites at present time in The Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn.


Essential Functions:

  • Annual nutritional assessments of children at all centers, frequent trainings, workshops, and continuous oversight of food service operations at all centers
  • Workshop and training topics range from food safety, mandated nutritional guidelines/menu planning, classroom activities about food and nutrition, and general pediatric nutrition information (Workshops are conducted for both staff and parents)
  • Nutritionist is responsible for periodically assessing sites’ compliance with CACFP guidelines and NYC health and nutrition standards and for overseeing menu quality and kitchen protocols/procedures
  • Nutritionist will meet one-on-one with children and parents when a nutritional issue or concern arises
  • Nutritionist will work closely with Health Services Coordinators and site directors to meet the nutritional needs of every child and to develop food and nutrition-related policies and procedures for centers.
  • Nutritionist may be called upon to assist Head Start Directors with grant writing for nutrition-related projects



Minimum Experience and Skills Required:

  • Minimum 2 years nutrition experience, some of which must be in pediatrics
  • Strong background in all areas of nutrition – clinical, community, and food service with an emphasis on nutritional needs of young children
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Must work well with others and have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint


Education, Licenses, and/or Certifications Required:

  • Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RD/RDN)
  • Certified Nutritionist-Dietitian (CDN)

Preferred Qualifications and skills:

  • Bilingual Spanish preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of CACFP Guidelines and Head Start performance standards a plus
  • Prior experience in Head Start and/or similar Childcare setting strongly preferred
