Serving working families in the community, Sheltering Arms’ Early Childhood Education program meets a growing need for high quality, affordable early education. Our dedicated educators guide children through hands-on learning activities and a constantly growing set of innovations, such as mental health support and exposure to the arts. Our model is informed by New York’s Common Core learning standards and the Creative Curriculum, ensuring that children gain the early literacy, math, and cognitive skills they will need to succeed in Kindergarten and beyond. Sheltering Arms’ 12th and largest day care, the Harriet Tubman Early Childhood Education Center in the South Bronx adds to our widely reputed ECE program, inspiring hope, encouraging curiosity and learning for 150 children ages 2-4 years old. The Harriet Tubman Center is a new, state of the art facility that boasts features such as a gym, auditorium, and advanced learning technology in every classroom!

Sheltering Arms is currently seeking Custodians for our Early Childhood Education Day Cares. The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the center premises and its equipment in a clean, safe and sanitary condition, including seasonal maintenance. Full time unionized positions (DC 1707 and Local 205) are available in Brooklyn and Harlem; comprehensive benefits package included.


Essential Functions:

  • Completely cleans all classrooms and facilities; Keeps play yard and front of center clean daily
  • Cleans and disinfects bathroom and kitchen areas on a regular basis; Sweeps, mops, and waxes floors; 
  • Completes all basic repairs to furniture and equipment; Paints and primes walls and ceilings; Checks all doors and windows, locks up carefully
  • Keeps an inventory of distributed sanitary supplies; Keeps inventory for supplies and submits reports; Assists with food service as needed
  • Shovels snow and lays down salt when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) or relevant vocational training/certifications
  • Two years of custodial experience
  • Basic mechanical, plumbing and electrical knowledge
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Ability to be a team player, flexible
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • First Aid and CPR trainings required and recertified as needed

Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to complete all standard administrative and support tasks including but not limited to climbing up and down stairs, operation of computers/phones/fax/printer/copy machine, and the ability to lift boxes, furniture, and equipment up to 60lbs. Must be able to travel from the various locations and sites of Sheltering Arms. Must be able to go up and down ladders and lift heavy boxes. Must be able to shovel mass amounts of snow. Physical and PPD clearance required.
