We are looking for a coach who will serve as mentor to provide direct support for youth ages 16-21 who are placed in our family foster care program. Coaches will receive training in motivational interviewing and mentoring youth to help them address areas such as education, employment, life skills, social and emotional development, personal and family relationships, and other aspects of participants' lives. The Coaches will work with the youth to set goals in these areas and help the youth make progress toward these goals. Coaches will be assigned a small caseload of the highest need youths. Coaches will be responsible for meeting with youth three times per week to provide additional on-call support as needed. Coaches will report directly to the Program Director.


Essential Functions:

  • Meet/speak individually with no more than 6 assigned youth three times a week in the office or in the community.
  • Be available to provide emotional support, guidance, and advice to mentees 24/7 via phone.
  • Assist mentees in personal development and growth.
  • Work collaboratively with youth to develop goals and develop an effective tool to track progress toward youth-developed goals.
  • Help youth achieve their goals utilizing motivational interviewing techniques.
  • Attend initial and ongoing training and other technical assistance or professional development activities identified by Sheltering Arms Children & Family Services, ACS or OCFS
  • Additional related functions as needed.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or related field required
  • Knowledge of the New York City Child Welfare System
  • Experience working with youth in foster care strongly preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of positive youth development preferred
