The Career Development Specialist will work with the PYA youth to develop skills to obtain/retain employment as well as to assist with identifying and applying for employment.  The job developer will work with the Columbia Workforce Program to develop these same skills with the staff members working with our PYA youth, as well as be the point person for the Columbia Workforce Program from within Sheltering Arms.

Essential Functions:

  • Meeting each PYA participant to develop an individualized career development and employment plan. 
  • Assisting in creating a portfolio i.e.; resume, cover letter, a list of references and proof of skill sets.
  • Identifying appropriate career exploration activities, internships and job placements or identifying proper educational avenues.
  • Working with students on budgeting, opening checking accounts, understanding the need to save.
  • Ensuring that the youth understand how to get to work, what to wear, how to interview, how to be on time and understand what is expected on a daily basis while at work.
  • Meeting with program staff to ensure information is shared and to ensure proper program and service coordination.
  • Creating partnerships with employers, local businesses, and schools.
  • Following up with each placement and provide opportunities to further their career or schooling
  • Acts as a constant source of support for the teens and provides appropriate feedback to allow for their success.
  • Track employment placement outcomes and retention for participants and utilize data to improve the quality of services provided.
  • Serve as the point person for the Columbia Workforce Program.
  • Other duties that may be assigned.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field
  • Knowledge of NYC workforce development and child welfare systems
  • Ability to motivate participants toward full-time, entry-level employment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel
  • Comfort traveling throughout NYC to provide services
  • Prior experience with facilitating training preferred
