We are looking for an Education Specialist who will be responsible for helping our family foster care program ensure that all children in our care reach their full academic potential by working with case planners, supervisors, children, birth parents, foster parents, and the Department of Education. The Education Specialist will be working out of our Manhattan and Bronx office.

Essential Functions:

  • Work with case planners and supervisors to identify all children requiring specialized educational services and alternative school placements, and provide assistance with complex school transfers and home schooling.
  • Establish a collaborative and interactive relationship with the Department of Education (DOE), Committee on Special Education (CSE) and Committee for Preschool Education (CPSE) and all other related services.
  • Support case planners in following up on recommendations made on behalf of a child’s educational needs, including advocating directly with DOE, CPSE and CSE.
  • Attend referred children’s Family Team Conferences and other related meetings to achieve consensus around appropriate educational placements for children.
  • Attend case-specific parent/teachers school conferences and other education-related conferences.
  • Assist with locating After School programs and tutoring opportunities for children.
  • Document in connections all diligence in working with referred children, case planners, and school officials.
  • Assist in obtaining report cards and individual educational plans where extenuating circumstances exist.
  • Attend educational forums at New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) and other institutions.
  • Develop a monthly tracking system of children’s education placement and progress and outcomes of individualized interventions
  • Provide on-going training to agency staff, birth and foster parents on NYC DOE initiatives; special education; rights of students and parents and strategies on how to successfully negotiate the system to ensure the best outcomes for children.
  • Assist and support in all areas of high school applications.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in education, social work or a related field
  • Strong commitment to community work related to advocating for children’s educational needs 
  • Excellent communication, planning, organizational and multi-tasking abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Comfort traveling throughout NYC
  • Experience working with NYC DOE preferred
