Sheltering Arms is seeking a Peer Navigator who will serve as an outreach and support for clients participating in the MSA/Hope and Care program. 

Essential Functions

  • Identify HIV-positive persons in the community and link them to care
  • Help people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) navigate the service system and assisting them to access and participate in care and treatment services
  • Provide community work such as awareness, advocacy and prevention education
  • Engage “harder-to-reach” clients who have fallen out of care or have not entered
  • Facilitate client communication with health professionals
  • Gather information for health educator and case manager
  • Follow up with clients who miss appointments
  • Explain the HIV life cycle and how medications work, provide treatment adherence information and strategies for complex HIV/AIDS treatment regimens
  • Share personal knowledge and experiences when appropriate
  • Provide encouragement to address ongoing challenges of HIV-infected individuals, their partners, families and caregivers, including disclosure to partners and others in their life
  • Demonstrate self-care strategies to clients
  • Enter all contacts into AIRS database system in narrative form
  • Represent the agency at various venues to promote agency services


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED; BA Degree preferred
  • Group facilitation experience
  • Basic HIV/AIDS and STIs knowledge; experience with at risk population preferred
  • Non-judgmental approach and ability to empathize with others; Genuine interest in working with disenfranchised individuals; Self-motivation skills and the ability to work collaboratively
  • Dynamic energy, able to multi-task and negotiate multiple demands on attention
  • Ability to work weekends
  • Bilingual Spanish/English
