Sheltering Arms is seeking to hire a Direct Support Professional II (DSP II) for our Bronx site. 

The DSP II is responsible for all DSP responsibilities.  In addition will provide Person Centered enhanced behavioral intervention (as trained), medical interventions and follow-up, active treatment/community inclusion activities and participation during ISP and other individualized related team meetings.  Provides hands on care, assistance, training, and support to each individual who resides in the home.

 

Essential Functions

  • Support individuals with physical care, toileting, showers, teeth, grooming, dressing and stress good hygiene
  • Through experience and additional training, provide individualized, enhanced interventions by learning the individuals’ personalities, likes, dislikes, goals, desires and way of functioning and know when and how to support the individuals. 
  • The DSP II will also follow the Person Centered Approaches, Ethics, and Core Competencies training guidelines by always promoting autonomy and independence.
  • Support the individuals by teaching the skills needed for daily living and socialization according to their abilities
  • Support and assist individuals in keeping their rooms, clothing and possessions in good condition
  • Help individuals with eating and drinking skills and table manners
  • Participate in toilet training of individuals
  • Administer medication using AMAP training and guidelines
  • Work under the direction of Therapists, Nurses and Social Worker to learn helping and coping skills and be receptive to enhanced training from all clinical staff
  • Record daily log, activity sheets, trip evaluations and attendance sheets
  • Provide enhanced active treatment and community inclusion activities by following the Person Centered Plan and provided activities such as but not limited to; purchasing individualized items at community stores, provide opportunities to attend individual’s preference on where to worship, choice in recreational activities, health facilities, etc..  In addition the DSP II will ensure individuals’ safety while helping them to learn how to navigate their community.
  • Participate as a member of a Team in the development, implementation and evaluation of each individual’s Person Centered Plan of Care.
  • Carry out fire drills, evacuations and emergency procedures.  Attend staff meetings and in-service training sessions
  • Assist with training, modeling, and orientation of new DSP’s starting their work assignments.
  • Other related tasks that may be assigned

 

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma minimum requirement. 
  • AAS or College Credits preferred
  • At least 2 years’ experience with individuals with Developmental Disabilities preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate application of specialized training. Ability to understand the accountability as guided by Person Centered Approaches, PRAISE, Ethics for DSP and Core Competencies for DSP trainings.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing and work within a team setting. 
  • Training in AMAP, First Aid, CPR and SCIP-R upon hire preferred, however training provided to incumbents.
  • Valid New York State Drivers License Required.

Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to complete all direct care worker and standard administrative and support tasks including but not limited to hands-on care with consumers, climbing up and down stairs, and the ability to lift and move consumers (if necessary) up to 200 lbs, ability to lift boxes, furniture, and equipment up to 30 lbs.
