Sheltering Arms is seeking an Assistant Program Director of Early Childhood Education (ECE) Programs to support the Director of Early Childhood Education Programs to provide ongoing and effective oversight of all day care programs including Early Childhood Day Cares, Universal Pre-K’s, Integrated Classrooms, Early Head Start, and Head Start. The incumbent will supervise the Family Service and Health Service components of ECE. This is a full time position, with travel throughout our various day cares; comprehensive benefits package included. 

Essential Functions

  • Assist the Director of ECE in providing coaching and support to Education Directors.
  • Supervise the daily operation of program sites in the absence of Education Directors.
  • Directly supervises and manages key personnel within the department including the following job titles: Health Services Coordinators, Family Services Workers, and Fatherhood Specialists.
  • Directly supervise program interns and the Family Service and Health components to ensure program contractual mandates are met in enrollment, attendance and eligibility.
  • Support Education Director in developing and maintaining strong working relationships and continuous collaboration with parents, community partners and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct site visits to ensure compliance with DOE, DOI, OCFS, ACS, and Early Learn mandates and regulations.
  • Support the Education Directors in dealing with challenging situations that may occur in the day to day running of the program. Serve as a mediator/facilitator when necessary to provide resolutions to conflicts between parents and staff
  • Work closely with Education Director and Employee Relations in handling employee grievances.
  • Ensure agency policies and procedures are properly implemented at sites and provide feedback as needed.
  • Assist Education Directors in ensuring the site is at capacity through advertising, recruiting, monitoring enrollments.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of ongoing staff training and development
  • Work closely with site directors and HR Generalist to support recruitment of employees, interviewing, and succession planning
  • Monitors employee performance, support site directors with performance management and achievement goals
  • Collaborate with Training Department to map out professional development needs of ECE each year
  • Perform other duties as assigned 


  • Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field and NYS Teacher Certification.
  • 4-5 years prior management experience n Early Childhood Education
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office as well as industry standard technologies
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • First Aid and CPR trainings required and recertified as needed

 Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to complete all standard administrative and support tasks including but not limited to climbing up and down stairs, operation of computers/phones/fax/printer/copy machine, and the ability to lift boxes, furniture, and equipment up to 30lbs. Must be able to travel from the various locations and sites of Sheltering . As a day care worker, providing quality care for children will require a high degree of physical exertion. Must have the ability to lift and hold children, sit down on the floor and stand up frequently and walk quickly around the classroom. In addition due to the high level of energy in the clients during all physical activities and outings, must be able to run, play, and travel with the children. Physical and PPD clearance required.
