Family Services Worker (Part Time), Early Head Start

Job Summary:  Under the direct supervision of the Family Services Coordinator, the Family Services Worker meets all goals associated with outreach and recruitment of children/families; Provides families with community resources and ensures that the family is able to reach short and long term goals.

Essential Functions

  • Part-time schedule; 21 hours per week; 8am-4pm Weekdays
  • Continually recruits and oversees the eligibility and enrollment of children
  • Establish a wide network of community resources that will enable families to reach their goals for themselves and their children;
  • Conducts numerous home visits throughout the year and identifies strengths and opportunities
  • Advocates energetically for parents and provides community resources
  • Provides referral services
  • Promotes parental involvement and provides ongoing support in the Head Start Program
  • Transports family to appointments
  • Completes all documentation and reports in a timely manner
  • Participates in staff trainings and meetings
  • Maintains confidentiality of all client records
  • Develop and plan activities for children and families that will support their optimal growth and enhance the relationship between parent and child.
  • Organize and facilitate parent-child socialization groups and parent workshops.
  • Coordinate medical, dental and other community-based services that will offer comprehensive support to children and their families.
  • Maintain accurate case records to meet Head Start, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor Degree in social work, human services, family services, counseling, or a related field preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of a credential or certification in social work, human services, family services, counseling, or a related field or be on a study plan to obtain one.
  • Experience with early childhood development 0-5 years preferred 
  • Familiarity with the community and community resources
  • Prior experience advocating for families preferred
  • Must have an extremely flexible schedule and be comfortable working evenings as necessary
  • Must be comfortable traveling throughout NYC
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
  • First Aid and CPR trainings required and recertified as needed

Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to complete all standard administrative and support tasks including but not limited to climbing up and down stairs, operation of computers/phones/fax/printer/copy machine, and the ability to lift boxes, furniture, and equipment up to 30lbs. Must be able to travel from the various locations and sites of Sheltering Arms .. Physical and PPD clearance required.
