Sheltering Arms is seeking Family Support and Resource Specialist to be responsible for the outreach, screening, assessing families for maternal child health services, conducting outreach, and establishing linkages in the community. The Family Support and Resource Specialist will also be responsible for assisting the Program Director with needed tasks such as event planning, filing and organizing documents, and updating resource binders etc.


Essential Functions:

  • Assess parents for enrollment into Home Visiting using the Parent Survey which assesses for domestic violence, family stressors, bonding and attachment issues and other risk factors associated with child abuse and neglect
  • Provide resources and referrals to parents as needed
  • Participate in street and community outreach, community presentations and other efforts to educate the community about the program
  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners (hospitals, CBOS, shelters etc) to maintain a steady base of referrals and develop linkage agreements
  • Maintain screens and other pertinent documents in FAW binder and the electronic database
  • Provide coverage to Family Support and Resource Specialists as needed; may conduct home visits to cover staff that are out on extended leave
  • Aid Program Manager in development and/or updating of training curricula, resource directory, forms, brochures, fliers and other program materials as necessary
  • Responsible for organizing and executing tasks at client/program activities and events, which may be held in evenings or on weekends and may require some moderate lifting of items
  • Assist in replenishing promotional items as needed
  • Work on special projects and event planning surrounding the program as assigned including minute taking and managing RSVPs
  • Complete all orientation and wrap around training as well as a minimum of 30 hours of training per year which may require overnight or weekend travel upstate and out of state
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Early Childhood, Human Services or related field preferred but High School diploma is minimum requirement.
  • Ability to be non-judgmental and establish trusting relationships; good problem solving, listening and practical skills; demonstrates maturity, self-awareness and emotional well-being;  shows respect and sensitivity with individuals of differing cultural, racial, sexual or ethnic identities; some knowledge of community resources.
  • Open to working evening hours and weekends when necessary
  • Fluent in Creole
