Assistant Teacher (Therapeutic Nursery)

Job Summary:  The Assistant Teacher works closely with the head teacher, assisting with the planning and execution of lessons developed to impact positively on the social, emotional, educational and health needs of the children placed within the class and center as a whole.

Essential Functions:

  • Works within the framework of the day care center to carry out its functions, policies and procedures
  • Assists in the planning and execution of an education enriched preschool program
  • Assists with all activities that take place in the center, including program activities and off-site trips
  • Keeps equipment and material accessible and in good condition in addition to removing all hazardous material, and disinfecting toys and materials
  • Works with children in both large and small groups following lesson plans
  • Writes daily notes regarding the assigned children’s progress, with a focus on IEP goals addressed
  • Participates in the writing of Child Study forms
  • Attends and participates in regularly scheduled child study conferences; staff meetings, Classroom Consultations and weekly team meetings
  • Participates in related training opportunities as they become available
  • Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with parents
  • Respects confidential nature of all information about parents and children
  • Takes responsibility for the classroom in the head teacher’s absence
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Teacher's Assistant Certification (New York Stated Education Department) with TEACH account
  • First Aid and CPR trainings required and recertified as needed; plus trainings and workshops in: Child Abuse; School Violence Intervention and Prevention; DASA

Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to complete all standard administrative and support tasks including but not limited to climbing up and down stairs, operation of computers/phones/fax/printer/copy machine, and the ability to lift boxes, furniture, and equipment up to 30lbs. Must be able to travel from the various locations and sites of Sheltering Arms. As a day care worker, providing quality care for children will require a high degree of physical exertion. Must have the ability to lift and hold children, sit down on the floor and stand up frequently and walk quickly around the classroom. In addition due to the high level of energy in the clients during all physical activities and outings, must be able to run, play, and travel with the children. Physical and PPD clearance required.
