Floating Youth Specialist (Bronx)

Job Summary: Our Non-Secure Detention (NSD) and Non-Secure Placement Facilities are 12-bed programs that house juvenile delinquent youth between the ages of 11-17. The Floating Youth Specialist (YS) will be responsible for assisting in our NSD and NSP Bronx facilities to provide adequate care, safety, custody, control and counseling with the aim of allowing the youth to leave the house and become a productive member of society.  The Director of Juvenile Justice Facilities will assign the Floating Youth Specialist to Bronx programs based upon daily staffing needs.  Because the Floating YS will need to work in different programs, s/he must have experience as a YS in the NYC juvenile justice system.


Essential Functions

  • Ability to work various hours and days of the week
  • Provides direct supervision of residents at all times.
  • Manages residents' behavior utilizing the principles of the Integrated Treatment Model with the goal of teaching the young people to make positive, lasting changes in their behavior.
  • Implements daily living routines, schedules and procedures.
  • Assures the safety of the residents and maintains security.                                 
  • Participates in the planning and execution of educational, recreational, and personal enrichment activities.                                                                 
  • Provides safe transportation for residents to attend various appointments (including driving residents to and from school, medical appointments, and off-site family visits).
  • Attends all mandatory training required by ACS, OCFS and the Agency.
  • Adheres to all ACS, OCFS and agency regulations.  
  • Utilizes Safe Crisis Management techniques when necessary.
  • Manages the peer group, understands peer group dynamics, promotes and maintains a positive peer group culture.
  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • High School Diploma or GED + 2 years experience working with At-Risk youth   
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • Prior experience working with adolescents in juvenile justice setting required
  • Must be Safe Crisis Management (SCM) certified and recertify annually
  • Experience working with ITM preferred
  • Ability to travel throughout the five boroughs
  • Ability to drive a 10 to 15 passenger van
