Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Grants Writer /Manager to write New York’s most compelling grant proposals, RFP submissions, and reports. As a key member of the Development and Communications team, you will play a critical role in securing the resources we need to serve New York’s highest need communities. As our Writer Extraordinaire, you’ll influence the long-term trajectory of Sheltering Arms and place your stamp on our impact.

You’ll play a key role in defining our message to both the private and public sector, as we seek to substantially increase our institutional grant revenue. As our Grants Writer / Manager, you’ll write for government, corporate, and foundation funding support. You’ll partner with committed team members from across the organization to assist with proposal and report creation, institutional donor stewardship, and all grants management efforts.

Development and Communications Team Overview

Our team fuels the growth and impact of the organization through fundraising, branding, marketing, and volunteer management initiatives. Essential Functions:

  • Work with the Director of Development to plan, manage, and update the calendar of proposals and reports for the entire year, initiate prospecting efforts to identify and research new opportunities and ensure prompt acknowledgement of foundation gifts; 
  • Develop and write grant proposals to foundations and other grant-making organizations, persuasively communicating our mission and programs to potential funders;
  • Assemble and submit grant requests, including letters, proposals, logic models, budgets, and assorted attachments as required;
  • Provide writing support on key stewardship initiatives like small- and large-scale events and communications.

Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, detail-oriented, highly organized professional with the ability to work well under pressure and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent writing, analytical, and prospect research skills are essential.  A communicator with presence who can align and influence various stakeholders with the demonstrated ability to craft funding proposals in a succinct and compelling manner.  Must have a clear understanding of budgets as they relate to grants. Government RFP writing experience a plus. 
  • A high level of computer literacy and experience using online databases and other sources to locate biographical, financial and philanthropic information required.
  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience in development, grant writing, project management, and prospect research required.
  • Writing samples of successful grant or marketing proposals; a recap of demonstrated accomplishments; and a salary requirements range must be provided for consideration.

Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to complete all standard administrative and support tasks including but not limited to climbing up and down stairs, operation of computers/phones/fax/printer/copy machine, and the ability to lift boxes, furniture, and equipment up to 30lbs. Must be able to travel from the various locations and sites of Sheltering Arms.
